Frequently Asked Questions

Please reach us at intakes@TheLearningSpecialist.org if you cannot find an answer to your question.

What is a learning specialist?

A learning specialist is a highly trained professional who goes beyond traditional tutoring to address the underlying causes of a student’s academic challenges. Rather than simply helping with homework, we assess how a student learns, identify skill gaps, and provide targeted, research-based intervention to build lasting skills in reading, writing, math, and executive functioning.

How is your approach different from traditional tutoring?

Traditional tutoring is often content instruction in core school subjects and focuses on completing homework assignments or preparing for tests. Our approach is fundamentally different. We provide personalized, diagnostic, and skill-based intervention designed to remediate learning gaps at their source. We don’t just help students get through school—we help them become independent, confident learners.

What types of students do you work with?

We work with students who benefit from specialized, individualized instruction, including those with:

  • Dyslexia
  • Dysgraphia
  • Dyscalculia
  • ADHD
  • Executive functioning challenges
  • Writing and language-based learning differences
  • Twice-exceptional (2e) profiles

We also support students who may not have a formal diagnosis but are not reaching their academic potential.

What programs or methodologies do you use?

Our instruction is grounded in evidence-based, research-driven methodologies. We incorporate:

  • Structured literacy approaches
  • Explicit, systematic math instruction
  • Executive functioning coaching
  • Diagnostic and prescriptive learning plans

Every session is tailored—no two students receive the same plan.

Do you personalize instruction for each student?

Absolutely. Each student receives a fully individualized plan based on their strengths and areas of need. Instruction is continuously adjusted based on progress to ensure meaningful growth.

What kind of results can families expect?

While every child’s journey is unique, families can expect to see growth in both academic skills and confidence. Over time, students develop stronger foundational skills, increased independence, and a more positive relationship with learning. These results often present within the first several weeks of working with us.

How do you track progress?

We use a combination of:

  • Baseline assessments
  • Ongoing data collection
  • Session notes and skill tracking
  • Periodic progress updates with parents and caregivers

This allows us to monitor growth and make informed instructional decisions.

How long does it take to see improvement?

Progress depends on the student’s starting point, consistency, and specific needs. Many families notice early improvements in confidence and engagement with academic gains within the first several weeks.

Where are sessions held?

We offer flexible options including virtual and in-person sessions, depending on availability and location. We serve children in-school and in-home in Los Angeles and Philadelphia (including surrounding burbs).

How long are sessions and how often do students attend?

Sessions are typically 50 minutes. For optimal progress, we see students a minimum of 2 times per week.

What does a typical session look like?

Sessions are structured, engaging, and goal-oriented. They include:

  • Review of previously learned skills
  • Direct, explicit instruction
  • Guided practice with feedback
  • Strategy development for independence

Do you offer evaluations or assessments?

Yes. We conduct assessments to better understand each student’s learning profile, identify gaps, and guide instruction from the start. We do not diagnose learning differences, but will let you know if a more comprehensive evaluation is needed.

What are your rates?

Our services are highly individualized and reflect the level of expertise and specialization provided. Families can expect to invest on average $175 per session depending on the specialist your child is paired with. We offer multi-session packages and slides for households with financial needs.

Do you require a minimum commitment?

No. Because meaningful progress takes consistency, we often work with students for at least 3 months.

Do you accept insurance or offer superbills?

No. We do not directly accept insurance since we offer an educational service, not a medical service. However, you can inquire with your insurance company about whether or not educational services are covered, and we can include codes your carrier needs to see on your invoice on a case by case basis.

Do you offer packages or memberships?

Yes. We offer structured service plans designed to provide consistency and maximize progress. Details are shared during your consultation.

What is your cancellation policy?

We require 24 hour advance notice for cancellations or rescheduling. Full policy details are provided during enrollment. However, children get sick, so we are flexible with unexpected illnesses.

Do you collaborate with schools or attend IEP meetings?

Yes. We value collaboration and can work with your child’s school team, including attending meetings and reviewing educational plans.

Do you communicate with teachers or other providers?

With your consent, we coordinate with teachers and other professionals to ensure a cohesive support plan.

Can you support IEP or 504 goals?

Yes. We align instruction with your child’s IEP or 504 plan to reinforce targeted goals and support overall progress.

How do I know if this is the right fit for my child?

Our services are best suited for families seeking specialized, individualized, and consistent support. The consultation helps determine if we are the right match.

What if my child needs support outside your scope?

If your child would benefit from services outside our expertise, we will provide thoughtful referrals whenever possible.

How do I get started?

The first step is to book your complimentary consultation to share your child’s needs and determine if our services are the right fit.

What happens during the consultation?

During the consultation, we:

  • Review your child’s history and current challenges
  • Share our approach and recommendations
  • Answer your questions
  • Outline next steps

Is there a waitlist?

Due to the individualized nature of our services, availability may be limited. If particular learning specialists are at capacity, we offer a waitlist and will notify you when a spot opens.
